VR Developer Posts Countdown for Oculus Rift Release Date

Oculus VR remains tight-lipped on the release date for a consumer version of its Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). The company has suggested the full release is finally nearing with the recent reveal of a new prototype dubbed Crescent Bay but is yet to confirm if it will even be launching next year. Now a VR developer has started fresh rumours of the anticipated date by posting a countdown to a proposed Oculus Rift release date on its official website.

That developer is Arch Virtual, which has included a countdown timer that currently pits the Oculus Rift’s release at 178 days away. The timer is set to end on 30th April 2015. The developer itself is currently working with the Oculus Rift to create architectural, real estate marketing and even medical and safety VR experiences. Its portfolio includes a Suzuki Himalayan Driving experience and a simulation of the Amercia’s Cup yacht racing competition.

The company hasn’t provided any source for which its countdown is based upon, so it’s important to take this as strictly a rumour for now. That said, the date does fall in line with VRFocus‘ report from earlier in the year in which multiple sources suggested that the device will launch as a sort of Beta rollout anywhere beginning from April 2015. This launch is expected to be very limited at the time before building momentum towards a fully-fledged release.

Oculus VR is currently selling its second development kit (DK2) to developers on its website. The Crescent Bay prototype includes new features such as full 360 degree positional tracking and integrated audio. At the time of its reveal Oculus VR CEO Brendan Iribe stated that it was on the path to the eventual consumer version of the device. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all news on the Oculus Rift’s consumer release, reporting back with all of the latest updates.
