Having first been revealed back in February 2014, today marks the release of one of the first truly virtual reality (VR) compatible movies in Zero Point from Condition One. The movie is now available through Steam at a reduced price of £9.59 GBP. That price will remain until 3rd November 2014 when it will stick at the standard £11.99. The experience requires either the first or second development kit (DK1 and DK2) for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) for viewing.
Zero Point supports a full 360 degrees of viewing, taking audiences through the rise of VR technology. The movie visits some of the pioneers of the technology as well as taking viewers to locations that include Stanford research labs, combat training simulations and even the halls of one of the videogame industry’s biggest annual events, E3. The Oculus Rift is used to deliver an immersive 3D experience unlike anything else seen before in film.
Zero Point marks one of the first VR film releases. Earlier this month a crowd-funding campaign was launched for another franchise named Hell Mountain. If this is any indication, VR movies should be a fairly prominent medium in the near future. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with all the latest updates.
