Windlands Updates Demo for New Speedrun Competition
Last month indie developer Ilja Kivikangas launched an IndieGoGo crowd-funding campaign for the upcoming virtual reality (VR) compatible action adventure videogame, Windlands. So far the campaign has been progressing smoothly, with just under $12,000 USD of its $14,000 funding goal raised and over three weeks before the campaign comes to an end. This week sees the developer give the campaign an extra push with a new demo update and competition.
Kivikangas has launched a speedrun competition for Windlands in which players are challenged to clear the demo as quickly as possible. All four of the demo’s Key Pieces must be collected and players must reach the White Circle for the timer to stop. Players have the option to use either development kit for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) or a regular screen. In Windlands, players explore fantastical environments, making huge leaps and swinging on a grappling hook.
To assist those who take part, the developer has updated the Windlands demo as found on the IndieGoGo page with new features designed for speedruns. Version v0.3.1a includes a timer as well as a reset button for quickly restart after any mistakes. A new 180 degree turn option has also been added as have a number of other features. Both this version and the older 0.3.0a version will be accepted in the competition. Players must record their speedruns themselves, make the video publicly available and then send a link to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject title ‘Speedrun’ to take part.
The overall winner will have their name featured in Windlands‘ credits as ‘King of the Hill’ and will also have their name carved in stone in the title’s full release. The title is expected to launch on PC in May 2015. VRFocus will continue to follow Windlands‘ progress, reporting back back with any further updates.
