Though virtual reality (VR) enthusiasts have already had success adapting titles such as Mario Kart 64 to include Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) support, the industry is yet to see a dedicated kart-based VR videogame. That’s soon set to change as indie developer Viewpoint Games plans to fully reveal its upcoming VR compatible karting title, VR Karts, at the Backspace Warwickshire videogame festival in the UK this weekend on Saturday, 1st November 2014. VR Karts will be the developer’s first title.
A few details on VR Karts have already been revealed. Viewpoint Games has said on its official website that the title is aiming to be ‘fun and approachable’ and will include online modes. A handful of screenshots, one of which was released with the announcement of the upcoming reveal as seen above, showcase the title’s cartoon art style that takes players through a number of colourfully themed environments. The Twitter message from Backspace reveals that the experience is coming to the Oculus Rift, although the website notes that the title is being developed for ‘the new generation of VR Headsets.’ Could this also mean Gear VR and Project Morpheus support?
Judging by the teaser image, VR Karts will at least offer a first-person perspective mode. Details on gameplay modes, items and more are still yet to be revealed. VR Karts’ reveal will take place between 14:00 – 16:00 GMT. It appears as if those attending will get a chance to play the videogame for themselves. Expect more details about the title to be revealed around then. VRFocus will continue to follow VR Karts closely, reporting back with any further updates on the title’s progress.
