Unreal Engine 4-Developed Mental Torment Episode One Released for Oculus Rift

The most recent update to the Oculus VR Share Beta has brought with it a slew of new horror-based virtual reality (VR) experiences for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). One such experience is Mental Torment Episode One from indie developer The Andronauts. The fist-person title has been developed using Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 and features full support for the Oculus Rift’s second development kit (DK2).

As the developer describes, Mental Tormet Episode One aims to bring a photorealistic quality to VR horror titles. Players will find themselves in a dark environment littered with blood-soaked walls and other traps, looking for a means of escape. As they tour the various rooms and corridors they will have to endure a tense atmosphere with scares popping up along the way. The developer even warns that if they become too scared while playing, they should stop.

Despite the Episode One naming, it’s not clear if the developer will continue to create future versions of Mental Torment. The title is designed for 30 minute play sessions with the Oculus Rift. It’s currently available to download for free on PC, though there’s no mention of possible Mac and Linux versions. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with all the latest updates.
