It’s now become fairly clear that Samsung’s upcoming smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD), Gear VR, won’t be launching in mid-October 2014 as initially thought. Neither Samsung nor partner Oculus VR have offered anything in the way of when the device might finally release, even with the Galaxy Note 4 smartphone with which it runs now rolling out around the globe. However a listing from a UK-based online retailer not only provides a price for the anticipated kit but also a release window and a bundle offer.
Clove has the Gear VR listed for £189.99 GBP with VAT. According to the retailer, the device will now be launching in mid-November. A bundle offer includes a gamepad for £229. Sadly there doesn’t seem to be any kind of bundle for a Gear VR and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 itself, which is going for £575, meaning the HMD, a controller and the phone would set VR fans back £804. Of course, the Galaxy Note 4 can be ‘purchased’ for less through various deals with phone networks in the UK, which could be the preferable option for many.
This information is yet to be confirmed by either Samsung of Oculus VR. It’s worth noting that the site lists many of the experiences that were revealed at the Gear VR’s unveiling in September as launch titles for the kit. Again, it’s yet to be confirmed if some of those titles would even release on the kit, letalone launch alongside it. Still, with 2014 nearing its end, solid information can’t be far off now.
When Gear VR does launch, it will be at an Innovator Edition aimed at early adopters and developers. Future versions of the device are yet to be detailed. VRFocus will continue to follow the Gear VR going forward, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
