Given that the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) is yet to see a consumer launch it’s not often that VR enthusiasts see the launch of a full videogame with dedicated support for the device. But later this month indie developer Proton Studios will launch such a title in Time Rifters, a co-op shooter on PC that takes a unique approach to multiplayer gameplay. This week the developer has given the title an official launch date and price.
Time Rifters will release on Steam on 21st October 2014 for $9.99 USD. In the title players use ‘time rifts’ to essentially work in cooperation with an earlier version of themselves. Each level pits players in an arena in which they must kill all enemies in four lives. However, each time the player starts a new life they will be accompanied by their previous attempts, meaning they can focus on a different group of enemies.
Along with this ‘single player co-op’ concept the title also features asynchronous multiplayer in which players can use previous attempts from their friends or other people to help them in each match. The first-person shooter (FPS) will boast six different upgradable weapons, three episodes with five arenas to compete in for each one, high score boards and the developer’s own soundtrack.
Time Rifters will feature full support for the Oculus Rift but also be compatible with standard monitors. VRFocus will continue to follow the title leading up to launch, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
