Despite virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMD) not yet being available to consumers 2014 has seen countless examples of devices such as the Oculus Rift being used for marketing. San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) 2014 featured a number of exhibits in which the HMD was used to advertise films and TV shows. Yet another example of this type of marketing has been announced this week with the reveal of a new Oculus Rift experience for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming sci-fi movie, Interstellar.
As Variety reports, Paramount and IMAX are working together to bring this special sneak peek of the anticipated title to audiences across the US. Starting from today people will be able to strap on the Oculus Rift and experience a zero gravity envrionment on the Endurance spacecraft. In the movie Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain use this craft to travel through a wormhole in search of a new planet for mankind to live on.
The experience will be travelling across the US throughout October and November 2014. A full list of dates and locations for the exhibit can be seen below. The movie itself is set to hit cinemas in early November. This is arguably the highest-profil use of the Oculus Rift yet thanks to high anticipation for Interstellar. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, bringing you the latest updates on each project.
