Darknet ‘Flavour Demo’ Adds Oculus DK2 Support

Indie developer E McNeill announced significant news for his upcoming virtual reality (VR) compatible videogame, Darknet, this week. McNeill revealed that the title would be initially be launching for free with the release of Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD) until the device integrated a premium store option. To accompany the news the developer has also launched a new version of Darknet‘s ‘flavour demo’, first released back in April 2014.

The new version of the demo includes support for the Oculus Rift HMD’s second development kit (DK2) and is available via the title’s official website. As the name implies, this is just a small taste of the Darknet experience, described by the developer as a two-minute guided demo. The new version is only compatible with DK2, although the original version, compatible with the first development kit (DK1), is still available.

Darknet is centered around hacking, taking inspiration from the likes of Ghost in the Shell. Players break through firewalls by solving procedurally generated challenges. The title plans to launch on Gear VR first, which will hopefully happen later this year. After that a full version will also appear on the Oculus Rift on PC and Mac. VRFocus will continue to follow the title in the future, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
