Over the past few months you may have heard of Ceek from Next Galaxy. Little about this social virtual reality (VR) platform has been revealed so far, though VR fans are soon to find out more as its creators have today announced an incoming Beta in which users will be able to test out the experience. The beta will launch in roughly a month’s time and be compatible with the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).
Next Galaxy describes Ceek as a ‘three-dimensional metaverse’ in which players can take part in events and activities while talking to each other with real-time voice chat. The software utilises Next Galaxy’s Ceekars VR dedicated audio headset first announced in September 2014, allowing for omnidirectional 3D audio as players watch video content and more. Exactly how much content will be in the beta is yet to be revealed.
“Facebook’s $2 billion acquisition of Oculus and now Google leading a $542 million investment in Magic Leap validates our contention that interest in Virtual Reality is reaching a fever pitch. These high profile investments are supercharging the race to make virtual a reality,” said Mary Spio, President of Next Galaxy Corp.
Should all go to plan then the full version of Ceek is scheduled to release in 2015 with features such as Youtube and Facebook sharing along with realistic 3D avatars generated from uploaded images. The platform certainly sounds ambitious, then. That said it seems as if the Beta will have to release before its possible to really see what Ceek is. VRFocus will continue to follow the platform moving forward, reporting back with any further updates.
