Marvel Entertainment has already taken its first steps into the world of virtual reality (VR) however slight and now it’s time for DC Entertainment to get in on the action too. The company has today announced a ‘commercial holographic video’ based on the acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series TV show for both the Oculus Rift and Gear VR head-mounted displays (HMD).
Developed by visual effects company OTOY, the Batman: The Animated Series experience is described as an ‘interactive narrative experience’ that transports audiences to Bruce Wayne’s iconic Batcave. The title uses OTOY’S OctaneRender and light field technology to recreate the setting as seen in the Bruce Timm-produced series that first debuted in 1992 before producing a number of other series based on DC comics superheroes.
“We are continuously exploring new and exciting ways to tell stories and share experiences with audiences around the globe, and we’re excited to be working with OTOY on this cutting-edge adaptation from Batman: The Animated Series,” said Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series the company behind the original show. “More to the point: It’s super-cool, eye-popping stuff, and fans are going to love it. We can’t wait for them to have the chance to see the Batcave from the show again — for the very first time.”
Further details about the plot and how the experience will actually play out are yet to be revealed. The experience is set to see its first launch in winter 2014 through the ORBX viewer app. Obviously this will first see release on Gear VR, then, with the Oculus Rift yet to see a consumer release. VRFocus will continue to follow the project leading up to release, reporting back with any further updates on ites progress.
