Horse racing videogames may not be the most popular genre within the medium, but the promise of convincing virtual reality (VR) support could well attract a few newcomers. That’s what developer Strategic Designs hopes to achieve with the upcoming Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) support for Starters Orders 6, which launches today in beta on PC, with Mac and mobile version expected in 2015.
While support for the Oculus Rift currently isn’t included in the title, the developer has promised that it will be “coming soon for a true ‘in the game’ VR experience”. The experience will be playable with the Oculus Rift at the upcoming EGX London event at Earls Court on 25th – 28th September 2014 as well as the Play Expo in Manchester on 11th – 12th October. The VR demo will allow players to race on Frankel at Epsom, Black Caviar at Sha Tin or Desert Orchid in a chase at Aintree.
For now, the beta version of the experience includes races with up to 40 participants across events such as the Aintree Grand National and Cheltenham Gold Cup. Players can even race against ‘legendary horses’ from the past in some events. The title is currently available for £19.99 GBP, although a free demo can also be sampled over on the series’ official website. It’s not clear when the experience will launch as a full product outside of beta.
VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with any further updates.
