July 2014’s San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) contained a few surprises for virtual reality (VR) enthusiasts, including a new experience for the Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD) based on Guillermo Del Toro’s popular blockbuster movie, Pacific Rim. The title created a lot of buzz at the time, with Del Toro himself commenting on his excitement for VR and even the possibility of further integration between the franchise and technology. Now that same experience has been revealed for Samsung’s newly-announced Gear VR HMD.
Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot, as it’s called, featured as part of Samsung’s showcase at its Unpacked event in Berlin, Germany on 3rd September 2014. The experience, which lets users pilot the famous fighting machines from the 2013 movie, was playable at the event along with a wide range of other confirmed titles and experiences. It’s not clear if this means that the experience could release to consumers on Gear VR in the future.
The HMD itself is expected to launch as an early Innovator Edition in mid-October 2014 at a price below $200 USD. A range of titles have already been confirmed for Gear VR’s launch, and you can expect more to be announced in the month leading up to its release. VRFocus will continue to follow Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot and Gear VR going forward, reporting back with any further updates.
