Last week it was revealed that Ocean Rift, an underwater exploration title from indie developer Llyr ap Cenydd would be coming to Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) along with the Oculus Rift version. The title was one of the first to be revealed for the new device, which was announced at Samsung’s Unpacked event in Berlin, Germany. Now the first footage for that experience has arrived, and can be seen below.
Over six minute of footage can be seen in the video, providing a good sense of Ocean Rift’s peaceful atmosphere as players explore a range of aquatic environments populated with exotic wildlife. As shown here, players can bring up a menu at any time and choose to warp to several locations to find certain types of animals. The highlight of the footage undoubtedly comes towards the end in which the player spends some time with whales as they communicate.
It’s not yet clear when Ocean Rift might launch on Gear VR, although the title is also preparing for release on the eventual consumer version of the Oculus Rift. VRFocus will continue to follow the title going forward, reporting back with any further updates.
