Oculus VR surprised virtual reality (VR) fans earlier in September 2014 by subtly revealing its first internally developed videogame, VR Quest for Gear VR. The title, a third-person dungeon crawler, was on display at the reveal event itself without Oculus VR making much in the way of an announcement about it. Today at the Oculus Connect developer conference in Hollywood, California, Oculus VR Chief Technology Officer Carmack touched upon the title a little bit more.
Speaking about the quality of visual presentation with VR titles right now, Carmack mentioned that VR Quest was one of the better looking Gear VR titles right now due to its colours. He also teased that the title was ‘Zelda-eqsue’, referring to Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series and even suggested that VR Quest itself was a working title, at one point stating ‘whatever we end up calling it’. It wasn’t much, but it was one of the first times that Oculus VR itself has spoken about the experience.
Gear VR is expected to launch in mid-October 2014 as an Innovator Edition for developers and early adopters. It’s not clear where VR Quest might fit into the HMD’s line-up. Could it be one of the many launch titles confirmed for the device or is it perhaps set to follow on later in 2015? VRFocus will continue to follow the title going forward, reporting back with any further updates.
