Indie developer Iridium Studios is currently working on an anticipated voice-controlled real-time strategy (RTS) title, There Came an Echo. Developing the title is a full time job by the studios’ own admission, but that hasn’t stopped it from announcing a new, virtual reality (VR) compatible side project, Lunasee. The title was one of the scores of new videogames to be confirmed for Samsung’s Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) this week.
Little is currently known about Lunasee, though according to the developers players will compete to shoot down flying targets, using a betting mechanic to maximise high scores. The touchpad at the side of the device is used to fire energy bursts where the player is looking, which the team teases may have been inspired by the Marvel superhero, Cyclops. Inspirations continue with the title’s visual style, which is reminiscent of classic sci-fi movie Tron.
“Honestly, we were just bored on Sundays,” said Jason Wishnov, CEO of Iridium Studios, of Lunasee‘s announcement. “Football season hadn’t started yet, so what else were we going to do? Exercise? Please. We’re proud to do our part to advance humanity toward exploring virtual worlds and subsisting on feeding tubes in only the barest fading semblance of a fulfilling human life.”
While it’s not currently clear if Lunasee will be released at the launch of Gear VR in mid-October, the developer has revealed that the title will be completely free. VRFocus will continue to follow Lunasee going forward, reporting back with any further updates on its development.
