It’s been a whirlwind of a week following Samsung’s Unpacked event in Berlin, Germany on 3rd September 2014. The company used the event to reveal not just its new Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone, but also the Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD) that will use it’s 5.7-inch Quad HD display for virtual reality (VR) experiences. Following the event VRFocus revealed the release window and target pricing for the HMD, though even more specific details have recently been released on a pre-order page for the device.
Mobile Fun is currently accepting pre-orders for Gear VR starting at £150 GBP. The online retailer identifies itself as a ‘Samsung Authorized Dealer’, lending some weight to this price tag. Unfortunately the site doesn’t mention a release date, meaning we’re still left with the vague mid-October 2014 window. Given that the retailer is a phone accessory specialist, it doesn’t list the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 or its pricing, leaving that part of the cost in question.
Gear VR will launch first as an Innovator Edition, designed for developers and early adopters. The kit features an on board touchpad as well as head-tracking technology. As for audio, VRFocus recently revealed that Gear VR uses the smartphone itself for sound. VRFocus will continue to follow the device going forward, reporting back with any further updates on its development.
