It’s barely been 24 hours since About Face VR launched its Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for its About Face comfort and hygiene system for the Oculus rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) and already the company has good news to share. The campaign has achieved its base goal of $12,391 USD, with 28 days to go before it comes to a close. The goal was reached with the help of around 300 backers.
“Thank you all so much for supporting the About Face project!” About Face VR’s Eric Greenbaum wrote on an update for the official Kickstarter campaign. “I feel so lucky to be a part of this amazing community and to be doing my small part to upgrade your VR experience. Considering the momentum we picked up today, we can proceed with manufacturing without delay in order to get you your rewards packages ASAP.”
About Face consists of an an ergonomic, force dispersing insert and removable and washable microfiber encapsulated foam liners. These are designed to distribute the pressure created by wearing either the first or second development kit (DK1 and DK2) to more robust areas of the user’s face. They also work to combat other issues such as keeping the HMD clean from sweat and are available in a range of colours. Two versions of the system are available, one focusing on persona use and the other for using a HMD at a public display.
About Face is expected to start shipping in December 2014. The company has even revealed a new $36 tier dubbed ‘Last Chance Early Bird’ in which those interested can again purchase both types. VRFocus will continue to follow the system going forward, reporting back with any further updates.
