Portal 2 STEM Motion Controller DLC Hits Steam Greenlight

Earlier this week VRFocus reported on the launch of a fan-made expansion to Portal 2 on Steam Greenlight with support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). Now another VR-related Portal 2 expansion has hit the service, this time in the form of upcoming DLC with support for Sixense’s STEM motion controller, which is designed for VR experiences. The campaign’s page currently encourages visitors to wait on voting for it.

According to the mod’s developers, this expansion pack will add new levels to Portal 2 based around not only on the STEM but also Razer Hydra and PlayStation Movie motion controllers, both of which have be integrated with Portal 2 through official expansions in the past, developed by Sixense itself. This DLC isn’t from Sixense, which showed the STEM working with Portal 2 at the 2014 Game Developers Conference in 2014.

This DLC will feature a new antagonist, which appears to be based around HAL 9000, the AI antagonist from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s not clear just how the character will be implemented into the experience, though the developer also mentions that the title will ‘feature the E3 2010 style of Portal 2‘. Again, it isn’t clear exactly what this might mean at this point in time.

It’s not yet clear if the expansion will support the Oculus Rift like others have. VRFocus will continue to follow the expansion, reporting back with any further updates.
