The number of Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) compatible rollercoasters has increased dramatically with the recent release of the device’s second development kit (DK2). While some rides have taken players back in time, indie developer TimVR offers another unique ride in Lava Inc., which recently launched for free on the official Oculus VR Share Beta, where it can be downloaded on PC.
Lava Inc. was created specifically for the Oculus Rift DK2, though is also compatible with the first development kit, DK1. The title is set in a fictional factory that refines lava, located deep underground. During a weekend, a group of employees build a rollercoaster course throughout the complex, spanning various rooms that show the various stages of the company’s operations.
Players ride this rollercoaster and can even control its speed using the Oculus Rift DK2’s unique features. Leaning faster on blue parts of the course will accelerate the ride, while green tracks will let players experience high-octane moments, with red tracks serving as breaks. The developer notes that Lava Inc. should run fine on a moderate PC and can be controlled with a keyboard.
VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with any further updates.
