Oculus Creator on Consumer Kit: ‘I guess you could almost say it’s done’

Even following the first shipments of the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMD) second development kit (DK2), many questions have been raised over the release of the first consumer version of the device (CV1). The company has remained tight-lipped over just when we might see the final design and when it might be released, but it does at least know what that design will be.

Speaking in an interview with Heise at Gamescom 2014, Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey revealed that the company at least knows for sure what will be in the final design of CV1 and that, in that sense, the kit is ‘done’. However there’s still a long way to go until those designs can be shipped and sold.

“A lot of software companies, especially game companies, say it’s done when it’s done,” Luckey explained. “In the hardware industry what that actually translates into is it’s done when it was done a year ago, because you can’t just be done and now it’s ready to ship. When it’s done, when you know what you’re doing, it’s still many more months of getting components made, getting manufacturers lined up, building up stock. It takes a long time to go from there. So we’re at the point where we know what we’re shipping, I guess you could almost say it’s done. We’re not just waiting around to see how much better it gets. But it takes time to get it actually made.”

When asked again, the designer clarified: “We already know what we need to ship, we have the specifications we need to make that happen.”

Though certainly exciting, this answer still doesn’t give fans much of a clue as to when they will hear about the consumer version. Oculus VR has its own developer event, Oculus Connect, scheduled to take place on 19th – 20th September 2014 in Hollywood, California, where it has said it will talk about ‘the latest Oculus hardware’, though it’s not clear if this could refer to CV1.
