Mortal Kombat’s Iconic Pit Stage Reimagined in VR

The fighting genre is certainly going to be an interesting one to tackle in virtual reality (VR). Many of the genre’s conventions don’t seem well-suited to VR’s restrictions, although no doubt one developer will solve those riddles sooner or later. For now, VR enthusiasts can dream of what’s to come with this recreation of the iconic Pit Stage from NeatherRealm’s enduring Mortal Kombat franchise.

This demo, available for free via the official Oculus VR Share beta, allows players to explore the stage, which takes place on a high bridge above a deadly pit of spikes. Players used the Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD) to inspect the area in first-person in close detail. Traditionally the stage can be seen from a third-person view. Players can even walk amongst the spikes and bodies at the bottom of the stage.

The piece is yet another VR demo from indie developer Thiago Alcantara, who is behind other Oculus Share titles such as the recently-released Museum of Games. It’s currently available to download on PC, with no mention of possible Mac and Linux releases. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with any further updates.
