Even at this early stage, anime is no stranger to virtual reality (VR). While some indie developers have created labours of love that bring their favourite films and TV series to life, other companies have created more official experiences that bring fans closer to their favorite scenes and characters than ever before. Now a new experience based on Knights of Sidonia have been revealed, and falls into the latter of these two categories.
This year’s Japanese Anime Festa in Tokorozawa, Saitama will play host to an official 3D adaption of a launch sequence for one of the mechs to feature in Knights of Sidonia. Attendees will be able to strap in an Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD) and replicate the iconic scene for themselves for the very first time. The piece will be on display until the festival ends on 28th September 2014.
Earlier in the month VRFocus reported on a similar experience based on the hit anime series, Attack on Titan, which is also showing for a limited time in 2014. No word has been shared on if these experiences might one day be available to fans of the shows from across the rest of the world. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with any further updates.
