Oculus VR are continuing their public outings with the second development kit (aka DK2) of the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) this week at the Anime Expo 2014 in Los Angeles, California. The latest title to be showcased by the hardware manufacturer has been known to be in development for virtual reality (VR) HMD’s for some time, but has not previously been seen in public running on the devices.
Sword Art Online is a Japanese novel series written by Reki Kawahara. The story takes place in the near-future and focuses on various VR and videogame worlds, making it quite an interesting fit for a videogame presented in VR. Sword Art Online is designed to be a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), and will is the first of it’s kind to be shown publicly on the Oculus Rift DK2 hardware.
Currently in development at CyberConnect2, the studio behind the .hack// anime videogame series for PlayStation 2 among others, Sword Art Online is set to be published on PC by Bandai Namco Games, the same publisher that has recently announced a distribution deal for another VR title, Project CARS.
