Earlier in July production company Tool released a new virtual reality (VR) experience in which players could explore the town of the popular TV show South Park with the Oculus Rift VR headset. The demo is a faithful adaption of the beloved series, including many popular sights, characters and easter eggs for players to uncover. Now that very same experience has launched on the official Oculus VR Share Beta.
South Park VR can now be downloaded for free on Oculus VR’s software portal for both PC and Mac. “The core piece that we wanted to create would make use of the Oculus Rift in all of its glory,” the developer said of the experience. “We needed a free world experience with a bit of an edge and a beautiful simplicity. So naturally we landed on the world of South Park, which was a perfect blend of everything, in addition, we were huge fans of the iconic show.”
The demo was created using the Unity Engine, which has been used for many Oculus Rift compatible titles in the past. It is not yet clear if Tool will continue working in VR, though this ‘experiment’, as the developer describes it, must certainly go down as a success. VRFocus will continue to follow the company and report back with any more updates as to its work in VR.
