With E3 2014 now a distant memory, the videogame industry is fast turning its attention to the next major event in Gamescom, the public expo that runs from 13th – 17th August 2014 in Cologne, Germany. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) is set to have a presence at the show once more, and has recently dated its annual press conference. Could we see more news of the company’s Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) headset during the show?
SCE’s press conference will take place at 18:00 BST on 12th August, a day before the show gets underway as usual. In the past, SCE has used its Gamescom press briefings to announce significant news such as the launch date of the PlayStation 4 and reveal of the PlayStation 3 Slim model, as well as shift focus to its PlayStation Vita handheld system. Perhaps the company could find time to reveal more about Project Morpheus in this slot as well.
The headset made an appearance at E3 in June along with two brand new tech demos, but didn’t reveal anything in the way of release dates or hardware updates. SCE has stressed in the past that Project Morpheus is still in the early stages of development, but with indie developers already pledging support to the device, perhaps it’s possible that we’ll hear more about VR software for the kit at the show.
Project Morpheus was first revealed at the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March. The current version of the kit boasts a 1080p display, positional tracking and support for the PlayStation Move motion controller. VRFocus will continue to follow the progress of the headset, reporting back with any more updates.
