Most videogame fans are looking forward to August for one reason: Gamescom. The event, which takes place in Cologne, Germany on 13th – 17th August 2014, is set to be filled with announcements and reveals as per usual, with Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) scheduling its own press conference for the show. But videogame developers will be equally anticipating the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC) Europe, which slightly overlaps with Gamescom on 11th – 13th August. In fact, SCE also has a talk scheduled for the event focused on virtual reality (VR).
SCE Senior Game Designer Jed Ashforth will be hosting a talk titled ‘Rebooting Game Design for Virtual Reality’ on Tuesday, 12th August at 10:00 am CEST. Ashforth, who is currently working with the company’s Project Morpheus head-mounted display (HMD) for PlayStation 4, will be discussing moving from screen-based development to VR. Topics will including rethinking existing design assumptions, VR’s potential and new areas that the technology opens up for videogame designers.
“By examining the fundamental changes to interaction, immersion and emotional involvement that virtual reality offers, attendees will learn more about the new approaches and mindset that VR development requires,” a description for the event reads. It also suggested that developers either interested in getting into VR development or those already working with the technology attend the session.
VRFocus will be in Germany for Gamescom to bring you all the latest VR news and updates.
