Marvel Studios is premiering its next big blockbuster today in Guardians of the Galaxy, a sci-fi epic that focuses on an unlikely band of misfits banding together to save the universe. It marks a number of firsts for Marvel Studios, but also an important moment for virtual reality (VR) technology. Cinematic VR specialists Jaunt are currently recording the premiere event on the red carpet using the company’s own multi-directional camera.
“We’re on the red carpet of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY with @Variety,” the company posted on Twitter, complete with an image that can be seen below. “Feel like you were THERE #CinematicVR @oculus”
The tag suggests that the event will be stitched together and be viewable with the Oculus Rift VR headset, though the company hasn’t announced specific plans for the video. Another image, also below, again shows the camera at the event.
It’s another example of VR being used beyond videogames, and one of the most high-profile examples of VR being used for video thus far. Guardians of the Galaxy is set to open on 31st July 2014 in the UK and 1st August in the US. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with the latest.
