Project Morpheus Companion/Social Apps Revealed

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has often talked about using a second screen for its Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) headset on PlayStation 4. In the past it has suggested that this could involve a second player using TVs, smartphones or the PlayStation Vita to interact with titles. Now the company has revealed to VRFocus two companion apps for its existing Project Morpheus demos that deliver on these ideas.

Both apps come from SCE London Studio’s Project Morpheus tech demos, The Deep and the newly-revealed Street Luge, which VRFocus recently previewed. Earlier in the week VRFocus reported that SCE London would be bringing an updated version of The Deep demo to E3 2014, and app integration seems to be a part of that update. London Studio has produced a two-player app where one player can control a drone that accompanies players as they descend the ocean depths, while another can gather salvage for help the primary player.

For Street Luge, one of two new demos to debut at E3 2014, the developer has created a high score chart app, recording user’s speed as they travel as quickly as possible down a busy road on a luge. Until recently these demos had been thought of as simple technical demonstations for the Project Morpheus technology. Does app integration suggest that they could see a consumer release when the headset launches next year?

Project Morpheus was revealed at the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC) in March. SCE has stressed that the technology is still in its early stages, and won’t be ready to talk about consumer release details for some time.
