Many upcoming virtual reality (VR) compatible titles take the form of space combat titles. From EVE: Valkyrie to Star Citizen, the genre has become a fast favorite for Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus headset support, largely thanks to their ideal cockpit perspectives that can portray an immense sense of presence. Still, many of these experience as still preparing for release. If you want to play such a title with the Oculus Rift now, then Escape Velocity 2: Dogfight! may have you covered.
Indie developer Stephan Intissar recently released a trial version of this sci-fi title onto the Oculus VR Share platform. The free demo is available on both PC and Mac. In it, players control a spaceship from a third-person perspective and must defend their mothership from attack by enemy forces. The experience features rapid-fire lasers that can be used to target enemies, though ammo supplies are limited, making refills through power ups located on the map essential.
Players earn points by defeating enemies that appear from a warp gate. Once they have been destoryed, their worldwide ranking displays on-screen. While this demo version is free to play, its menu also contains options for beta and alpha access priced at $15 USD and $20 respectively. The beta grants player access to new modes, including multiplayer, while the alpha will allow players to become part of the title’s production process.
VRFocus will continue to follow the progress of Escape Velocity 2: Dogfight! Going forward, and report back with any more updates and details.
