Beasts of Prey Releases on Steam Early Access

Indie developer Octagon Interactive has launched its pre-release version of the upcoming massively multiplayer online first-person shooter (MMOFPS) Beasts of Prey this week. The title is available now on Steam’s Early Access program, granting players full access to the experience in its current state of development. Note that this isn’t the full release of the title, which is planned to launch towards the end of 2014 or around the start of 2015. It is available on both PC and Mac.

Beasts of Prey is an online title in which players are placed into a randomly generated world free of objectives and missions. While players can do as they please, they will likely want to gather resources and build settlements so that they can upgrade their technology and survive in a world filled with threats such as other, potentially hostile players and even dinosaurs that freely roam the land. The title comes with full support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset.

For its Early Access release Octagon Interactive has warned of potential issues with the title. This currently includes huge lag issues, which has forced the developer to remove the dinosaurs on its official server for the time being. The beasts can still be seen if players use a private server, though other bugs within the title have also been discovered. The developer has said that it hopes to address these issues within the next two – three days.

Beasts of Prey is available now for a discounted price of £21.59 GBP. On 12th June 2014 that price returns to its standard £26.99 position. However the developer has said that the price of the full release will differ to ‘represent the final state of the game’. It has also said that it plans to reach the beta stage of development in October 2014 and should be in Early Access for no longer than six months. VRFocus will continue to follow the title’s development moving forward and report back with any more updates.
