Videogame-focused virtual reality (VR) headset ANTVR has had a long Kickstarter campaign that has seen much attention drawn to it, both from optimistic backers and cautious enthusiasts. Now that campaign has come to a close, with the project far exceeding its initial $200,000 USD goal, raising a total of $260,834 with the help of some 681 backers. The money will help fund the development and production of the all-in-one headset.
“As you can see we’ve successfully finished the campaign, with some $60,000 to boot!” ANTVR wrote in a post-campaign update. “We just wanted to thank all of you from the bottom of our hearts. It’s always a leap of faith when you back a Kickstarter project – doubly so when it involves new technologies – so we’re very humbled that so many people believed in us and are anxious to help push virtual reality forward. We fully intend to make sure you’re not disappointed.”
The ANTVR kit consists of a VR headset with a 1080p display that uses aspherical lenses that the company claims help combat distortion in images. Not only that, but it comes with a controller that can take multiple forms. That includes a gun that uses motion sensing as a form of input, a handle that could be used as a sword, and a traditional videogame controller that uses button inputs as well as motion sensing. The kit is compatible with PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Android platforms, though the software itself will need to support stereoscopic 3D for the best effect.
Despite surpassing its intial goal by a good margin, the headset’s Kickstarter campaign did miss out on its two stretch goals, the first being a $300,000 goal for two extra batteries for the kit and the second $500,000 goal trading the LCD screen for an OLED one. Now that the campaign has succeeded the company hopes to start shipping its beta kits to backers in September 2014.
