Elite: Dangerous Dev Working With Oculus DK2

It appears that Elite: Dangerous developer Frontier Developments is already working with the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset’s second development kit (DK2). Designer David Braben has suggested as much, releasing an image of the space combat title being played with a DK2 in what appears to be the company’s own officies. The kit is expcted to ship to all developers that have pre-ordered it in July 2014.

Braben posted the image, which can be seen below, on Twitter, along with the message: “Playing #EliteDangerous on #Oculus DK2 in a Lakon Type 9.”

The Lakon Type 9 is a type of ship found within the experience. The picture shows what looks to be Elite: Dangerous concept art hanging from the walls, suggesting the image has been taken within the developer’s offices. Though it’s not clear if Frontier Developments owns this DK2 itself and is actively working with it, the company wouldn’t be the only one with the device before its official release. EVE: Valkyrie developer CCP Games has also been showing off its title with the headset at events such as EVE Fanfest.

The DK2 headset features a range of additions over its predecessor, the DK1. Chief among them are the new OLED 1080p display and a camera that allows for positional tracking. Expect plenty of in-development Oculus Rift projects to shift to DK2 support once the device is readily available. VRFocus will continue to follow the progress of both the Oculus Rift DK2 and Elite: Dangerous, bringing you the latest.
