PixelRouter VR’s Rift Wars has become an impressive showcase of what a small indie dev team can accomplish with virtual reality (VR) and the use of the Oculus Rift. The demo version, available now from the official Oculus Share website, has attracted a great deal of praise for both it’s visual design and intense shooter gameplay. PixelRouter VR has expressed their intentions to tidy-up the videogame in time for the launch of the consumer version of the Oculus Rift headset, but where do they go after that? Rift Wars: Arena, of course.
Speaking with VRFocus, PixelRouter VR’s James Andrew revealed that a sequel to Rift Wars was not only coming, but that the team has already decided on the route it will take.
“We are focused exclusively on building addictively fun games for VR, and Rift Wars represents one of the two sorts of games we are most inspired to make and play.” States Andrew. “Rift Wars is a classic, single player arcade game. These are great fun, and should have a place in every VR gamer’s library. The other thing which we are really excited about is building multiplayer games, designed from the ground up for VR.”
PixelRouter VR are always enthusiastic about their influences for Rift Wars, namely Starfox and Geometry Wars. In the case of the suggested multiplayer title neither do they shy away from naming their inspiration.
“Imagine taking the Rift Wars aesthetic, and transforming it into an Arena Combat game inspired by Descent. I don’t know about you, but I’d sure love to put on a Rift and jump into an arena and do some dogfighting. We are already experimenting with this internally, and its going to be awesome. Working title, “Rift Wars : Arena”.” Concludes Andrew.
PixelRouter VR’s Rift Wars is already a highlight of many gamer’s early Oculus Rift catalogue so a potential successor is likely to draw a lot of attention. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details from PixelRouter VR, Rift Wars and the future of Rift Wars: Arena.
