Spirited Away’s The Boiler Room Now Available from Oculus VR Share
Spirited Away’s The Boiler Room, has been released on the Oculus VR Share Beta. The project, which recreates an environment from the classic Studio Ghibli animation in virtual reality (VR), is the work of developer Nick Pittom. It is compatible with the Oculus Rift VR headset.
The demo was first hosted by Road to VR but has today been released on the official Oculus VR website. It’s designed to be a faithful recreation of the boiler room scene from the film, allowing users to tour the setting, complete with cel-shaded characters that the developer modeled and animated himself. Players assume the role of the movie’s protagonist, Chihiro. It was developed using the Unity engine and Pittom suggests using an Xbox 360 controller to get the best results.
The Spirited Away scene can also be downloaded from Pittom’s website. “I created this because of all the things I wanted to experience this was it!” he explained. “To be able to step into an animated film in a way that allowed you to be ‘inside’ it seemed a crazy challenge, but if it was easy then what would be fun in that!”
Pittom is also accepting donations to help fund future projects and hardware upgrades via his website. VRFocus will continue to follow Pittom’s work and bring you any new updates.
