Microsoft Has Been Working on VR for ‘a While’
Microsoft Game Studios’ Phil Spencer has revealed that the company has been working on virtual reality (VR) in some capacity ‘for quite a while’. Speaking at the 2014 Game Developers Conference this week, Spencer confirmed that the Xbox makers were interested in the technology, although he didn’t announce specifically what it had been working on.
“I think the technology is really interesting,” Spencer told IGN, “and it’s definitely something we’ve been playing with for quite a while.”
That said, Spencer did state that he didn’t think every experience should require a user to put a VR headset on, but did admit to the valuve of immersing players ‘completely’.
Rumours sprang up earlier this week that Microsoft was indeed developing its own VR headset. Shortly thereafter Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) revealed its Project Morpheus VR headset for the PlayStation 4. Could Xbox soon have its own device to rival that of both SCE and Oculus VR’s Oculus Rift? VRFocus will continue to follow the development of the project and report back with the lastest.
