Software developer Makemedia has introduced a new sci-fi racer that uses the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset at the Electronica Productronica China (EPC) event in Shanghai, this week. Working with RS Components, makers of the Raspberry Pi computer, the team showed off a 4-player experience in which players speed around a futuristic city, competing for the best lap time.
Players sat in Sparco rally driver chairs and strapped Oculus Rifts to their heads. The race course was a heatsink pipe that allowed for 360-degrees of movements and was littered with speed boosts for players to hit and slow-down gates to avoid. Overall around 720 attendees tried out the experience, with the best laptime clocking in at 02:06:35. The developer’s current best laptime sits at 01:39:58.
RS Components has said that it hopes it will be bringing the experience to future events, although specifics haven’t been revealed as of yet. VRFocus will continue to follow VR projects such as this and report back with all the latest.
