Samsung has gone into enormous detail about its Gear VR virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) for its newly-revealed Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone today. The company revealed both devices at the Samsung Unpacked event in Berlin, Germany ahead of this year’s IFA show. While Samsung mentioned that Gear VR would be launching this year, it failed to mention a more specific release window or pricing range. VRFocus has heard more accurate details from the show floor.
VRFocus was told be a representative that Samsung is looking to release Gear VR in mid-October 2014. A concrete date was not given, although this means we won’t have to wait long for the device’s full launch. As for price, it was said that the device would cost in below $200 USD. Keep in mind that’s without the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to run it with, so the while bundle will end up being a fair amount more. Of course, Gear VR isn’t a simple case for the phone, and includes many of the essential components for VR experiences, so the price isn’t surprising.
A range of developers have already pledged support for Gear VR, with new announcements flooding in by the hour. VRFocus will continue to follow each and every one of them, reporting back with all the latest updates.
