XING: The Land Beyond currently stands as one of virtual reality’s (VR) most promising and well-realised titles. Developed by White Lotus Interactive, this is an atmospheric first-person puzzle-adventure title that features full support for the Oculus Rift VR headset. VRFocus has previewed the title in the past as well as spoken to the developers about the project. Now the team has released a demo of the videogame, available for free on PC via the official Oculus VR Share Beta.
XING: The Land Beyond places players in the titular setting in the afterlife. Players must find out how they arrived in XING and just who they are, overcoming environment-based puzzles and expanding their abilities as they go. This demo is set in the videogame’s Rainforest level, showcasing Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4, which the team switched to developing on earlier in the year. A walkthrough for the demo can also be seen below.
“Our idea is to take players on a beautiful, fantastical and spiritual journey through the afterlife,” White Lotus Interactive said of the demo’s release. “It is non-combative and there are no time-restraints. We want players to feel intrigued by the story and puzzles presented, but also relaxed in the lush environments we create using the Unreal Engine 4.” The developer is also asking anyone that plays the title to take the time to fill out a short survey about it.
White Lotus Interactive hopes to release XING: The Land Beyond later in 2014 on PC. The developer has told VRFocus in the past that it would like to create VR content for ‘whatever VR tech is out there’, though is yet to confirm ports of the title to the likes of the Project Morpheus VR headset on PlayStation 4. VRFocus will continue to follow the title, reporting back with any more news.
