The unofficial virtual reality (VR) recreation of South Park arrived earlier this week, available exclusively for Mac. Thanks to demand from the VR community however, developers Tool have seen fit to create a Windows PC compatible version of their software which is now available to download for free.
Recreating popular anime and sitcom locations in VR is becoming something of a trend. Greg Miller earned some headline attention with his adaptation of Jerry Seinfeld’s apartment known as Jerry’s Place VR, and UK indie studio Fire Panda has built a solid reputation off the back of two anime creations: The Boiler Room inspired by Spirited Away and Totoro VR. However, South Park VR takes things one stage further by recreating the entire town from the television series.
“The core piece that we wanted to create would make use of the Oculus Rift in all of its glory. We needed a free world experience with a bit of an edge and a beautiful simplicity. So naturally we landed on the world of South Park, which was a perfect blend of everything, in addition, we were huge fans of the iconic show.” Reads the introduction on the official website for South Park VR.
South Park VR can be downloaded for both Mac and Windows PC formats from the official website for the experience, compatible with the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). South Park VR can also be viewed in your browser via the Unity plugin, however this version is not VR compatible. VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details on South Park VR and other VR experiences coming from Tool in the future.
