Yesterday VRFocus brought news that Creative Assembly’s upcoming survival horror experience, Alien: Isolation, would be compatible with the Oculus Rift virtual realtiy (VR) headset on PC. At the time we cited sources close to the development of the SEGA-published videogame. Now the title’s support has been officially confirmed, and has been revealed to be playable with the device at this week’s E3 2014 event in Los Angeles, California.
The confirmation comes from the official Alien: Isolation twitter account, which today confirmed: “A prototype experience of #AlienIsolation will be on the Oculus Rift stand. For those brave enough to try it #E32014”
A picture of and Oculus Rift’s second development kit (DK2) was also shared with the post and can be seen below. It doesn’t shown the user playing Alien: Isolation, but does curiously picture them with a Dualshock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4 in-hand, though this is likely being used for PC development. It is important to note that ‘prototype experience’ doesn’t necessarily confirm that the title’s support for the Oculus Rift will be carried all the way through to a consumer release, but it certainly seems like that could be the case.
Alien: Isolation is an upcoming first-person survival horror title that takes its inspiration from the hugely popular film franchise. Players are cast as Amanda, the daughter of Ellen Ripley from that franchise, going in search of her lost mother. Amanda soon finds herself on a space station being hunted by a single one of the iconic monsters, and must use weapons and tools to keep it at bay as they fight to survive.
Alien: Isolation is due out on PC on 7th October 2014. Though we’re yet to see a release date for a consumer Oculus Rift, it’s very likely that this title is releasing a good while before the device itself. It’s also due for release on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. Could we also see support for the Project Morpheus VR headset on the latter console? VRFocus will continue to follow the title’s development, bringing you all the latest.
