A developer by the name of phileday has released a new virtual reality (VR) video playback tool onto the Oculus VR Share Beta. Named Whirligig, the software is designed to let users watch fully immersive films with an Oculus Rift VR headset as well as add custom menus and set other features to optimise the viewing experience. The software can be downloaded for free on PC over on the official Oculus website.
Whirligig features support for AVI, MP4, MKV and WMV playback, playing in a range of wide field of view types. Videos can be controlled with having to remove the Oculus Rift itself and you can even use built-in options to tilt environments backwards and forwards and rotate images to change the north direction of the film.
“Although whirligig can be used as a player of immersive films it’s power is in it customisability,” phileday explains on his website. “My hope is that people will provide there films to be viewed by others on the Oculus Rift with this player already setup and customised for immediate playback. The author of the film will know that there work is being view in the way they want it to be viewed with correct tilt, scale, playback type and menus custom made for the films.”
phileday has said that a more thorough explanation of Whirligig‘s options are on the way. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all VR applications and bring you the latest.
