Star Citizen, a space simulation title from Cloud Imperium Games Corporation, has received a new patch that adds in support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset. After downloading update 11.1, which is available from the title’s official site, players can slip on a headset and walk around the title’s Hangar Module in VR.
The Hanger Module currently gives players their first taste of Star Citizen. In the full title it will act as a home base. Right now, Kickstarter backers are able to download the area and walk around for themselves while they wait on the full title’s release.
Oculus Rift support hits Star Citizen a little earlier than expected. It’s inclusion was promised once the Kickstarter campaign passed its goal, although many didn’t think it would be available at least until the full title’s release. Once that release does it, Star Citizen will offer players a chance to climb into space ships and dogfight across the stars.
This also makes Star Citizen one of the first Oculus Rift-supported videogames on Crytek’s Cry Engine 3. Could we see more developers using the engine for VR support in the future? VRFocus will continue to follow the progress of Star Citizen and bring you the latest.
